Finca El Molino
Harvest week at a traditional Andalusian olive estate
About this host
Finca El Molino takes its name from the stone mill that still stands at the edge of the grove — no longer used, but the anchor of everything here. The estate covers 60 hectares outside Úbeda, in the heart of Jaén province, where more olive oil is produced than anywhere else on Earth. The harvest runs November through January. Groups work with long-handled rakes and spread nets, filling trailers that head to the cooperative mill each evening. The work is satisfying and rhythmic, the landscape monumental — silvery-green groves as far as you can see.
The story behind this place
The Vega family has farmed here since the 1930s. The current mill was replaced by the cooperative system in the 1980s, but the old stone press remains as a reminder of how things were done. Carlos, the third-generation farmer, speaks little English but communicates plenty through gesture, laughter and very good lunch.
