Eleonas Papadopoulos
Harvest week among the ancient groves of the Mani peninsula
About this host
The Mani is the middle finger of the Peloponnese — rocky, sun-scorched and stubborn. Eleonas Papadopoulos occupies a terraced hillside above the sea, where Koroneiki olives have been grown since before anyone started recording such things. The trees are small and dense; the harvest is done entirely by hand and electric comb. November here means clear skies, cool mornings, warm afternoons and the distant sound of the sea. The work is technical and satisfying: learning to read each branch, positioning the nets, lifting without waste. Evenings are communal — long dinners in the courtyard, the host's oil on the table before anything else arrives.
The story behind this place
Stavros Papadopoulos is the fifth generation to farm this land. He worked as a marine engineer for 12 years, sailing tankers in the North Sea, before his father's illness brought him home for good. He has never gone back. The sea is still visible from every part of the farm.
