Casa do Vento
Grape harvest and olive picking above the Douro River
About this host
Casa do Vento clings to the schist terraces above the Douro River, where the valley walls are so steep that all work is still done by hand. In September and early October the focus is on the grape harvest; from mid-October the ancient olive grove takes over. Groups pick grapes into wooden crates carried on their backs up the terraces, then press the harvest the same evening in the estate's small adega. The shift to olive picking in late October feels almost like a different country — quieter, cooler, the valley mist clinging to the trees until noon.
The story behind this place
Ana's family has worked these terraces for four generations. She trained as a geologist but came home at 30 to work the land alongside her mother. Casa do Vento — House of Wind — is what the locals have always called the ridge where the farmhouse sits.
